Justice have enlisted Tame Impala for ‘One Night/All Night’, their first new music in nearly six years and the first taste of their fourth studio album Hyperdrama. It marks the first time the French electronica duo and the Fremantle one-man-band have collaborated. In a joint statement from Justice’s figureheads, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, they described the song as a hypothetical scenario playing out: “as if a dark/techno iteration of Justice had found a sample of a disco iteration of Kevin Parker.”

“Kevin has a sense of melody that’s fascinating in the sense that he manages to write melodies that feel both simple and natural, but very peculiar at the same time,” they said. “This song oscillates between pure electronic music and pure disco, but you never really get the two at the same time. This very idea of switching instantly from [one] genre to another within a song runs through the whole record, and is maybe showcased the clearest [on this track].”

The band have also shared a new music video for the collaborative single, directed by Anton Tommi, which can be viewed below.

Speaking about the creation of the music video in his own statement, Tommi describes the video as “a journey inside the cross” – ie. Justice’s iconic logo. “I [have] dreamed of creating a piece like this,” he said. “[It’s] a strange and experimental object, that looks like rave lighting inside human lungs and strobe light around a human heart.”

In addition to sharing ‘One Night/All Night’, Justice have also simultaneously shared a second track from Hyperdrama entitled ‘Generator’. The duo describe it as “‘Getaway’ by the Salsoul Orchestra, but with gabber and classic 90s hardcore techno sounds.”

“Disco/funk and electronic music at large have always been core elements of the music we make as Justice,” they said. “In Hyperdrama, we make them coexist, but not in a peaceful way. We like this idea of making them fight a bit for attention.”

Justice – ‘Generator’

Hyperdrama, the long-awaited follow-up to their 2016 album Woman, is set for release on April 26th, 2024. The group has largely been quiet since the end of the Woman world tour in 2018, with the exception of Augé releasing a solo album in 2021 and the duo’s debut album Cross being reissued in 2022 for its 15-year anniversary.

As for Tame Impala, the project has continued to work on collaborative singles since the release of The Slow Rush in 2020. Such team-ups have included Lil Yachty (on a remix of ‘Breathe Deeper’), Gorillaz (on ‘New Gold’), Thundercat (on ‘No More Lies’) and Dua Lipa (on ‘Houdini’).
